Q. What is Pilates? What is 'mind body excercise'?
A. Mind body & core strength. You’ve heard those terms before, but what are they? Well, they are much more than the latest fitness buzzwords – they are keys to a healthier body & mind through mindful movement.
Pilates is an innovative and safe system of mind-body exercise using a floor mat or a variety of equipment. It evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates & can dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels & performs. Pilates builds strength without excess bulk, capable of creating a sleek, toned body & a flat abdomen. (Yeah, we know – who doesn’t want that?!)
It is a safe, sensible exercise system that will help you look and feel your very best. It teaches body awareness, good posture & easy, graceful movement. Pilates also improves flexibility, agility & mobility. It can even help alleviate back pain.
No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you.
Q. Who is Pilates Suitable For?
A. Everyone! All ages & all levels of fitness can take Pilates & feel the great benefits from it. If you have any injuries, medical conditions or if you are pregnant or have recently had a baby, please check with your GP to get the 'green light' before getting started.
Q. How do I choose a Pilates Instructor?
A. Before you join a pilates mat class, reformer class or sign-up for private training, it is important to know your instructor is certified & insured through a recognized pilates training facility, such as Stott Pilates, Physical Mind, Balanced Body Pilates, BASI, or Polestar Pilates. For your safety, make sure you ask the instructor their level of training, if they carry insurance, years of experience & if they have anatomy & physiology training. Typically, it takes an instructor over 500 hours of teaching experience & 3 years to become certified. Your pilates instructor should also be insured. If they are not insured, you know they are not certified.
Q.Will Pilates fix my bad back?
A. Pilates is an excellent form of exercise to improve the core stability necessary for a healthy spine. Most clients find that with regular Pilates practice their back improves and/or goes away all together.
Q. Is pilates a safe form of exercise for pre and post-natal women?
A. Yes. If taught by a Certified Pilates teacher, Pilates can be very beneficial for pre and post-natal women. However, it's important to check with your GP and Pilates teacher before starting Pilates, continuing with classes once pregnant, or after recently having a baby.
Q. What's the difference between matwork and apparatus classes?
A. Both are based on the same principles of movement developed by Joseph pilates. Matwork classes are usually taught in a group (5 people or less at CSP) & incorporate a range of exercises performed standing and on a floor mat. Sometimes small pieces of equipment are also used. Apparatus classes are taught on large specialized equipment, including the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Ladder Barrel. These are usually taught in small (4 people or less), semi-private groups or one-to-one. CSP offers reformer & Pilatesstick classes.
Q. Will I lose weight?
A. Pilates is not primarily about weight loss. However, pilates exercise can support weight loss and give a more streamlined toned appearance.
